The 2014 Yamaha XVS95CEW, widely recognized by its street name, the Yamaha Star Bolt, represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of the "metric cruiser." When it debuted in late 2013 as a 2014 model, it wasn’t just another addition to Yamaha’s Star Motorcycles lineup; it was a targeted strike at the "Old School" aesthetic that had dominated the American market for decades. The "W" in its model designation denotes the striking Pearl White paint scheme, a color that perfectly highlighted the bike’s minimalist, mechanical silhouette.

By 2014, the motorcycle industry was shifting. The era of the "Mega-Cruiser"—bikes draped in massive amounts of chrome with 2000cc engines—was beginning to cool. In its place rose the "Urban Bobber" movement. Riders wanted machines that were authentic, easy to customize, and, most importantly, fun to ride in the city. The 2014 Bolt was Yamaha’s definitive answer to this demand, offering a package that was raw, reliable, and remarkably agile.

The Heart of the Bolt: The 942cc V-Twin
At the center of the XVS95CEW is an engine that is as much a styling element as it is a power plant. The 942cc (58 cubic inch), air-cooled, 60-degree V-twin was pulled and refined from the V-Star 950, but in the Bolt, it found a much more aggressive purpose.

Unlike many modern cruisers that moved toward liquid cooling to meet emissions standards, Yamaha stuck with an air-cooled design for the Bolt. This wasn't just about nostalgia; it was about the "look." By eliminating the radiator, hoses, and water pump, Yamaha was able to keep the front of the bike clean and open, a hallmark of the bobber style. To ensure longevity, the cylinders utilize a ceramic composite plating that offers superior heat dissipation and reduced friction.

The engine was tuned specifically for "low-to-mid" range performance. While some bikes chase peak horsepower figures at high RPMs, the Bolt delivers its maximum torque—approximately 59 lb-ft—at a mere 3,000 RPM. This gives the bike a "punchy" personality. When you’re sitting at a stoplight in the city, the Bolt doesn't require a lot of throttle work to get moving; it simply lugs forward with a confident, rhythmic thrum.

Chassis Geometry: The Urban Slicer
What truly sets the 2014 Bolt apart from its competition (most notably the Harley-Davidson Sportster 883) is its handling. Yamaha engineers utilized a double-cradle frame that uses the engine as a "stressed member." By bolting the engine directly to the frame without rubber mounts, the chassis achieves a level of rigidity that is rare in the cruiser world.

The wheelbase is a tight 61.8 inches. Combined with a low center of gravity and a 21mm narrow carbon-fiber reinforced belt drive, the Bolt feels incredibly light on its feet. While a wet weight of 540 pounds might sound heavy on paper, the weight is carried so low that the bike feels 100 pounds lighter the moment you lift it off the side stand. This made the 2014 Bolt a favorite for two very different groups of people: experienced riders who wanted a "flickable" bike for lane-filtering in traffic, and newer riders who felt intimidated by the top-heavy nature of traditional cruisers.

Aesthetics: The Bobber "Standard"
The XVS95CEW is the "Standard" model, which in 2014 meant it was the purest version of the vision. The Pearl White tank sat in stark contrast to the blacked-out engine, frame, and wheels. This "high-contrast" look became an instant classic.

The bobber DNA is evident in every corner of the machine:

The Fuel Tank: A slim, 3.2-gallon "teardrop" tank that allows the rider to see the tops of the cylinder heads while riding.

The Fenders: Real steel fenders, front and rear, which are "bobbed" (shortened) to expose more of the tires.

The Lighting: A simple, round 55/60W halogen headlight and a vintage-style LED circular taillight that mimics the "Sparto" lights of 1950s customs.

The Wheels: 12-spoke cast aluminum wheels that provided a modern, "tuner" edge to a vintage silhouette.
